Conexiones entre la degeneración macular relacionada con la edad y trastornos neurológicos

La degeneración macular relacionada con la edad (DMRE) es una afección ocular que afecta principalmente a la población adulta mayor, provocando una pérdida progresiva de la visión central. Recientemente, se ha investigado su posible conexión con diversos trastornos neurológicos, lo que ha abierto nuevas vías de estudio en el campo de la neurooftalmología. Estudios epidemiológicos sugieren que existe una correlación entre la DMRE y enfermedades neurodegenerativas como el Alzheimer y el Parkinson. La hipótesis principal radica en que ambas condiciones comparten factores de riesgo comunes, como el estrés oxidativo y la inflamación crónica, que podrían contribuir a la neurodegeneración. Además, se ha observado que ciertos marcadores biológicos, como el depósito de proteínas amiloides, son comunes en la DMRE y en patologías neurológicas, lo que indica un posible mecanismo compartido de patogénesis. A nivel celular, la disfunción mitocondrial y las alteraciones en la autofagia podrían jugar un papel crucial en la progresión tanto de la degeneración macular como de los trastornos neurológicos. Estos hallazgos resaltan la importancia de una aproximación interdisciplinaria para abordar estas enfermedades, promoviendo la investigación conjunta que podría conducir a estrategias terapéuticas innovadoras y más efectivas para mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes afectados por estas condiciones debilitantes.
