Avances en el tratamiento de la degeneración macular asociada a la edad: revisión narrativa

La degeneración macular asociada a la edad (DMAE) es una de las principales causas de pérdida visual en adultos mayores a nivel mundial. Este artículo de revisión narrativa explora los avances recientes en su tratamiento, destacando enfoques innovadores y terapias emergentes. Tradicionalmente, los tratamientos se han centrado en la administración de agentes antiangiogénicos para controlar la forma húmeda de la enfermedad, logrando resultados significativos en la preservación de la visión. Sin embargo, la investigación actual se extiende hacia nuevas estrategias, como la terapia génica, el uso de células madre y tecnologías basadas en inteligencia artificial para un diagnóstico más temprano y preciso. Además, se están desarrollando terapias dirigidas a la forma seca de la DMAE, un área históricamente desatendida. Estos avances prometen mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes y reducir el impacto socioeconómico asociado a esta enfermedad. A pesar de los progresos, persisten desafíos como la accesibilidad, los costos y la necesidad de estudios a largo plazo para evaluar la seguridad y eficacia de estas intervenciones. Este artículo subraya la importancia de continuar invirtiendo en investigación para enfrentar estos retos.
